Dilly’s Deli - Tempe AZ

March 8, 2018

This was our first day in the Phoenix area and we happened to be in Tempe right next to the ASU campus and I remembered reading about a place called Dilly’s deli so that's where we decided to stop for lunch and with all the dilly dilly's going around how could we not stop. So we went in and went up to the counter I ordered the smoky mountain sandwich and picked ciabatta bread ($8.59).

Mom got the dilly bird ($7.59)

and dad got the Ruben ($8.59) they both had there's on dark rye bread.

My sandwich was a rather large sandwich for me and I probably should've got the half size. I thought the sandwich was pretty good. I liked the smoked Gouda, turkey, bacon and the red onions, but what I didn’t like about this was the Russian mustard on it I thought it was okay for a while, but I eventually became pretty tired of it. I enjoyed Dilly’s deli except for the mustard but liked all the choices you had with different sandwiches and wouldn’t mind coming back and trying some of their other sandwiches. Dilly Dilly.

Blue Bonnet Café - Denver Colorado

January 13, 2018

For my birthday we decided to meet the rest of family in Denver and I picked the Blue Bonnet CafĂ© for lunch.  When we arrived we were pointed to the table for our group and chips and salsa was out and ready. This was very good salsa and pretty much like the salsa at one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in Phoenix (Tortas Chano) along with very good chips. I pretty much ate a whole bowl by myself.  When it was time to order I ordered the build your own combo with a chili relleno and cheese enchilada and a ground beef Burrito.

Everyone else ordered various other things like chili rellenos, chimichangas which they don't fry and Carnitas among other things. Then we had some more time to talk and eat more chips and salsa.

But soon enough the food arrived and I thought the enchilada and chili relleno both were very good, but I kind a wish I would've gotten some kind of meat in the enchilada. These were both good but my favorite part was the Burrito. The ground beef is pretty good inside but chicken or shredded beef would've made it even better. This burrito was smothered with green chili that had pieces of delicious pork that just fell apart. Along with these items was good rice and beans.  I very much enjoyed my meal and I think everyone did as well else did as well.

After we were finished with our entrées our waitress brought a plate of two sopapillas with cinnamon, caramel sauce and honey for me and a plate for everyone else to share. I'm not a huge dessert fan but I've always loved sopapillas and these were excellent and didn't disappoint. We all had a very enjoyable lunch and we can't wait to return especially my brother-in-law who later suggested we meet here again in the future so we will definitely be back.

Bacon part 2

For a while now I've heard a lot about Nueske's bacon so I decided to order a sampler of some of their bacon. The sampler I ordered contained 1 pound of Applewood smoked bacon, 1 pound of peppered bacon and a 12 ounce package of Cherrywood smoked bacon all for around $30 which included shipping.

Then I waited patiently for a few days and then one morning the doorbell rang and it was like Christmas morning. So I opened up the box and there were the three packs of bacon along with dry ice. My bacon had arrived and I couldn’t wait to cook and eat it.

First we tried the Applewood smoked bacon. We cooked half of it in a baking pan in the oven and the other half in a frying pan. The baked version needed more time in the oven then the package said, so we put it back in for a while. It still was very tasty but the fried version was better. This bacon had a strong smoke smell when we opened the package and smoked flavor that you couldn't miss.  I'm not sure if I could really tell that it was Applewood smoked, as opposed to another kind of wood.  There also didn't seem to be quite as much fat as typical bacon has and didn't shrink quite as much. This was great bacon and we made this with eggs that were cooked in the bacon grease which was delicious.

Next we tried the peppered bacon which we cooked all of it in the frying pan. It was pretty much like the Applewood, but was peppered around the edges so it made it that much better.  This was my favorite of the three packages. We had this with mac & cheese.

Then finally we tried the Cherrywood smoked bacon which was clearly smoked as well, but I don't know if I could tell much of a difference between that and the Applewood bacon. Of the three this was my least favorite for one simple reason it only had 12 ounces instead of a full pound. We had this with a different kind of mac & cheese.

I thought all of the Nueske's bacon I had was excellent and tasted great. I did like the peppered bacon a bit more, but they were all excellent.  I'm sure glad I ordered the sampler pack and tried out Nueske's bacon because it was well worth it.

Casa Gutierrez - Aurora Colorado

January 3, 2018

We were early for dinner so the place was not so busy. We were seated right away and the same guy who seated us was our waiter, he was very nice and friendly and did a good job.

He took our drink orders which were all three cokes and he dropped off some chips and salsa which was some good stuff that we all enjoyed. Then we ordered I ordered a pick three combo with a beef enchilada, a crispy chile relleno and a tamale. Mom ordered the chile relleno plate with one soft and one crispy relleno. And dad ordered a chimichanga of some sort. Soon after this the food arrived on square plates.  Mom and mine both came with rice and beans and guacamole which were all pretty good.

On my plate my beef enchilada had kind of a different sauce on it maybe a mole-ish sauce and there were some white pieces in the beef filling and I just assumed they were onions but after I bit into it I realized it was potato. I thought the chili relleno was a pretty good one and actually had a bit more heat than most, but still not my favorite I've ever had. The tamale was a chicken tamale which was nice and soft and covered in green chili and was very tasty. When I was full and about halfway through the plate I asked for a box.

Mom didn't know which relleno she liked best, but she did enjoy her meal very much

as did dad with his chimichanga
We were very happy with our dinner at Casa Gutierrez and would definitely return.
