Formerly Roberto’s this is one of our favorite places in
Phoenix but since last year they changed their name to Tortas Chano. We again
talked to Roger the owner for a bit and he was very excited to see us again and
he told us how nothing has changed besides the name and the picture on the
salsa jar. The name is the same as the restaurant their family has in Mexico.
This trip we made sure we were there on a Thursday to get their tamales.
I ordered one red beef and one green chili corn
tamale with rice and beans. The tamales were excellent as usual, previously I
wasn’t sure which was better, but for this day anyways I thought the green one
was better.
A week later we decided to come back and get some more tamales. We got there fairly early and thought for sure they have tamales, but they said they were all out which was quite disappointing. But I figured this gave me a chance to try something else off their menu that I might not otherwise would have ordered.
My dad ordered a chimichanga
and mom ordered a Carne Asada
torta. I really wasn’t sure what I
should get, but I eventually settled on two Carne Asada tacos. The guy at the
counter who is actually Roger’s son asked if I wanted guacamole and I said yes.
I got two tacos and you would think it wouldn’t be too much food but they were
fully loaded and you definitely got your money’s worth. These were quite good
tacos. The carne asada was good, the tortillas were pretty good and I really
liked having the guacamole and the pico de gallo on top of everything.
We also
ordered some chips and salsa and when our food was delivered they asked if we
want to try the green salsa so we did that. This was an alright green tomatillo
salsa but I think I like the red better. These tacos were quite tasty but still
not as good as their tamales.
This place has a new name, but has a same great tamales and
other Mexican food.
